What is a Breast Lift?
Mastopexy or breast lift is a surgical procedure performed to raise the position of sagging breasts to make them appear firmer and more youthful. The condition of ptosis or drooping in the breasts may occur due to aging or other factors. The skin tends to lose its elasticity and muscles also become weaker. As a result, the breasts sag significantly, and the areola and nipples may point downwards. The condition of ptosis in the breasts may occur following a pregnancy or major weight loss or gain, breast feeding, heredity factors, natural aging, gravitational forces, or other factors.
Sometimes breast lift may be combined with breast implants procedure or even with breast reduction, depending on the patient’s condition of breasts. Sagging breasts primarily cause aesthetic concerns to the patient, and it is possible to correct the condition surgically by raising and firming the breasts. The procedure involves removal of excess loose skin and tissue, tightening the underlying muscles, repositioning the areola and nipple to a raised position, and creating a support structure for the newly raised breasts. Problems such as stretched skin, asymmetrical breasts and enlarged areolas may also be corrected along with breast lift.
What Breast Lift Cannot Do?
Breast lift is not a procedure designed to increase or decrease the size of the breasts. These improvements can be achieved with breast augmentation or breast reduction surgeries. Breast lift may be combined with these procedures, if necessary. Patients in Orange County, Newport Beach, Torrance, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, CA and nearby areas may consult with Dr. Esmailian about the best recommended treatment options in their specific case.
It is important for the plastic surgeon to understand the unique needs and aesthetic goals of a patient, and suggest an appropriate treatment plan. Having correct information about the procedure and realistic expectations will help a patient achieve optimal satisfaction levels.
Breast Lift Techniques
Breast lift surgery can be performed using any of the following techniques, depending on the needs of a patient:
Crescent Lift or Nipple Lift: Mild cases of sagging breasts can be corrected with this straightforward technique. The surgeon will excise a crescent shaped piece of tissue from above the areola, and will raise the nipple to the desired position.
Benelli Breast Lift or Donut Mastopexy: This is also a less invasive breast lift surgery for moderate cases of drooping breasts. A donut shaped piece of tissue is removed from around the areola, and the areola is stitched back in position.
Vertical Mastopexy or Lollipop Breast Lift: This procedure is similar to the Benelli lift, but it involves an additional incision which goes straight from below the areola to the breast crease.
Full Mastopexy Breast Lift or Anchor Lift: For severe cases of breast ptosis, a full breast lift may be necessary. The plastic surgeon will make an anchor shaped incision starting from the areolar base to the bottom of the breast. Excess skin will be excised from the point where the breast meets the rib cage. Nipple and areola will then be placed into the desired position.
Following the surgery, the breasts will be wrapped in bandages or dressings in the incision area. A small drain may be inserted to remove excess fluid. Dr. Esmailian advises his patients in Orange County, Newport Beach, Torrance, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, CA and other areas to wear a support bra to expedite healing. Initial results of the surgery can be seen almost immediately after the surgery.
The full outcome will be visible over the next few weeks as the swelling and bruising subsides. Patients can resume their regular daily activities in 10 to 14 days, but heavy lifting and vigorous exercise should be avoided for several weeks until the healing is completed.
Breast lift procedure can sometimes be combined with breast implants to improve the position of the nipples and areolas as well as add volume to the breasts. Sometimes the primary procedure may be breast augmentation, but a lift may be necessary to address concerns such as large areolas, stretched skin, downward pointing nipples, and asymmetrical breasts. Dr. Esmailian has sufficient experience in combined procedures for patients in Orange County, Newport Beach, Torrance, Los Alamitos, and Long Beach, CA.
