If you are thinking of implants for breast augmentation or reconstruction, you should first give a good thought to the kinds of breast implants available. Breast implants are available in two varieties, silicone-gel and saline ones, with the latter in use for a longer time than the former. Saline breast implants have a shell made of silicone with saltwater solution inside the implant. Though there are pre-filled ones, most often they are filled with saline water during the breast augmentation surgery.
The sterile solution should also adhere to the regulations set by the United States Pharmacopeia of Normal Physiological Salinity. The other type of breast implant is composed of silicone gel and is chosen by women who want a more natural shape to their breasts. The gummy bear, which is a new-generation silicone-based implant, is preferred for its tear-drop shape and longevity.
Saline vs other implants
When a saline implant ruptures, you can detect it very easily and can take corrective action. In case of a silicone implant rupture, the gel stays within and the breast continues to look the same. There is a disadvantage to this, because it becomes difficult to know that there is a rupture. The FDA recommendations state that women with silicone gel implants need to get regular MRIs done to ascertain there are no ruptures. Incisions made for saline breast implants are smaller than those done for silicone-gel implants. This is one reason many women choose saline implants. From some surgeons’ perspective, women with very little breast tissue, seeking augmentation should opt for a gel implant, because of its more natural feel.

Talk to your surgeon
After an examination of your breast by way of charts and getting to know your medical history, the doctor will explain the procedure of inserting implants. The plastic surgeon will also tell you about the costs involved in breast augmentation surgery, the surgeon’s fees and anesthesia charges. Saline breast implants are not as expensive as gummy bears or the previous generation silicone implants. You should also ask your surgeon if a breast lift procedure will be performed along with breast augmentation to provide shape to your breasts. A breast lift procedure can be performed with both breast reduction and augmentation, but you will incur additional charges.
The surgery involves making incisions on any of these areas: your nipple region, under the arms or the infra-mammary fold, the point where the chest and the breast meet. It may take a week or so for you to fully recuperate, but the full results of breast augmentation will only begin to show anywhere between three months and a year.
