Breast Surgery Recovery

Farbod Esmailian | Plastic Surgery

Preparation is the best way to guarantee a successful and expeditious recovery following any type of breast surgery, and the professional team led by Dr. Farbod Esmailian, M.D., will ensure that you are equipped with all of the pertinent information you will need in order to have a stress-free recovery period. Each patient’s recovery process is different, and is dependent upon the specific nature of your breast surgery and your body’s individual capacity to heal. However, you can feel confident knowing that Dr. Esmailian is a double board certified plastic surgeon, who will do everything in his power during your surgery to minimize your post-surgical discomfort, and to enable you to return to your busy schedule as quickly as possible.

Prior to your breast surgery, it is a good idea to arrange for someone to assist you for the first few days of your post-operative recovery, because during this time you may experience fatigue, pain, swelling, bruising, and limited mobility performing your normal daily activities. Prescription pain medication will help to minimize your discomfort, but you should not be driving while taking this type of medication, and you may need assistance doing housework, lifting your children, or performing any type of physical work at your job.

If you are recovering from a breast augmentation surgery, you may notice a feeling of tightness in the breast area, as your skin adapts to the new size of your breasts and implants—this feeling is perfectly normal, and will lessen with time. You may also experience diminished feeling in your nipples and breasts immediately after your surgery. At your first post-operative visit, Dr. Esmailian will ensure that your incisions and implants are healing properly, and will instruct you on proper breast massage techniques to speed your recovery, alleviate discomfort, and keep your breasts feeling soft and natural. You will also be instructed to wear a special compression bra for a period of approximately two months. This will help to facilitate your successful breast augmentation recovery by reducing excess movement, and will decrease any discomfort or inflammation.

Most patients find that they are able to return to work within 3-5 days after surgery, and are able to resume most activities within 1-2 weeks, as discomfort lessens and bruising stabilizes. However, you will be advised to refrain from any strenuous activities that could raise your blood pressure and pulse rate, or which require strenuous use of your arm and chest muscles.

Your sutures will be removed approximately seven days after your surgery, and your follow-up appointments will be arranged during two-week, six-week, and three-month periods. The majority of post-operative swelling abates by the end of the third week, at which time you may experience “pins and needles” sensations in the nipple area, as your nerves begin to acclimate to your breast implants.

You will notice the initial visible results of your breast surgery immediately following your procedure, and these results will continue to improve over the course of the next nine months, as the scar tissue loosens and relaxes. Although the post-surgical changes to your breasts generally stabilize by the end of the first year, it is important to remember that outside factors such as weight gain or loss, pregnancy, and menopause can influence the shape of your breasts over time.

The majority of this information is specific to recovery from breast augmentation surgery; however, the general recovery timeline is very similar for most breast surgeries, and if you would like greater detail about the recovery process from a different type of breast surgery, please do not hesitate to contact our office.  Dr. Esmailian is passionate about helping his patients make truly informed decisions, and will take the time to thoroughly discuss all of the details of your breast surgery, helping you to select the best procedural choices to bring your surgical goals to fruition, and to ensure a successful and comfortable recovery period.
