A Nipple And Areola Reduction Can Be Performed With Other Procedures

Nipple And Areola Reduction With Dr Esmailian In Orange County

An areola reduction is an uncomplicated, simple procedure that does not take very long to complete; in addition, patients experience a relatively short downtime. Since Dr. Esmailian only removes the extra, peripheral areola, he leaves the nipple and the areola’s central portion attached. The pigment rests within the superficial portion of the skin; therefore, removing a thin layer of skin is all that is necessary to accomplish an areola reduction. Once this excess skin is excised, Dr. Esmailian uses fine sutures to re-attach the areola that remains. The sutures are placed internally and will absorb over time, so there is no need for the removal of sutures at a later date. Tape is placed over the incisions and patients may shower 2 days after the procedure. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and most patients return to work the following day. The resultant scar is placed between the normal skin and the pigmented skin of the areola in a circumferential fashion.

The scar will go through a process of initially becoming red and erythematous but subsiding after 6 months times to a fine thin line along the border of the areola. A nipple reduction surgery may also be performed under local anesthesia with minimal downtime as well. Two issues can be addressed with nipple reduction surgery: the nipple projection and/or the nipple width. Some patients have issues with one and not the other and some desire both the projection and the width to be addressed. This procedure is also performed with absorbable sutures preventing the need to have sutures removed in the office which may be uncomfortable. The resultant scars are minimal and very difficult to see over time.
